01 — The problem
The free ones are free for a reason. Fake download buttons, a queue of redirects, an installer that brings three friends. You paste a link into a stranger's server and hand them the URL, your address and whatever else the page felt like taking.
VidDL is an app you install once. The link never leaves your computer, the video is pulled straight to your disk, and the only thing on the other end of the connection is the platform the clip came from.
02 — How it works
It reads the post instantly and shows you the title, the creator and every quality it can pull, with file sizes before you commit.
Trim to a time range, drop on an attribution bar carrying the creator's handle, and stamp it with your own mark.
One pass, burned in, saved to disk. Nothing is watermarked by us and nothing is queued behind a paywall.

03 — The credit studio
The downloading is the easy part. What takes twenty minutes in a video editor takes two clicks here: the creator's handle on a clean bar, your own stamp on top, both placed exactly where you want them.

04 — Scribe
Point Scribe at a link or a file on your disk and it transcribes the whole thing locally, then turns the transcript into notes, highlights and a summary. Out come markdown, plain text, subtitles and JSON.
Transcription runs on your machine. The summary runs on your AI key — Anthropic, OpenAI, or a local model through Ollama if you want nothing to leave the building at all.

This is also why there is no subscription. We run no servers, so there is nothing to bill you for every month.
05 — What leaves your computer
That is the whole answer, but here is the long version. VidDL talks to exactly two kinds of address: the platform you pasted a link from, and the update server that keeps its extractors current. Your videos, your transcripts, your stamps and your API keys are files on your own disk.
Use it on material you have the right to use. VidDL is built for crediting creators, not for laundering their work, and reposting still means asking when it matters.
06 — Download
The Android app is a remote for the desktop, not a downloader of its own. Your computer does the work and the phone gets the interface and the share sheet.
07 — Questions
No. Files are written straight to your disk. The app has no analytics and no account system, so there is nothing for it to send anywhere.
It reads the creator's handle from the post and burns a small bar onto the video carrying that handle and the platform it came from. You choose the position, colour and size. It is baked into the pixels, so it survives reposting.
Only if you want summaries. Transcription runs locally either way. Summaries use your own Claude or OpenAI key, or a local model through Ollama for no cost at all.
Yes. One licence covers the machines you personally use.
Not yet. The underlying extractors do not support it, and we would rather leave it off the list than have it fail on your first paste. The day it works, it appears here.
